Protocell Field, Philip Beesley Architect Inc. Dutch Electronic Art Festival, Rotterdam, Netherlands, 2012. Andrea Ling, project lead. Laser-cut acrylic, silicon, mylar, stainless steel, aluminum, Arduino-controlled sensor and actuator networks. Protocell Field is a small installation arranged to form a chapel-like canopy within the vaulted main space of the Head Post Office on the Coolsingel in Rotterdam. New systems of responsive mesh columns with vibrating fronds and lengths of pulsing LED lights were introduced for this installation. Part of the project included a performance where thought-controlled Emotiv electro-encephalograph headsets were used as controllers for these new column systems, linking participants' varying emotional states with pulsing patterns of light and sound in the installation.
