Student Centre, Nipissing University Canadore College, Kongats Architects, 2009
Nipissing University Canadore College is a unique post-secondary institution in North Bay, Ontario, in the heart of the Canadian Shield. The design of the NUCC Student Centre was based on the idea of a modern log cabin turned inside out. The interiors featured extensive use of rough sections of wood logs and long wood planks, all treated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to prevent the wood from cracking as they dried out. This theme was continued on the curtain wall elevations, with a ceramic frit pattern that was developed using a set of 8 template panels to create a pattern of log round sections and wood planks. The templates were designed to allow for maximum variation in panel combinations and thus minimize repetition of the log patterns. The building was designed to LEED Silver standards.
